five hours of sleep is enoughMany say that the habit of sleeping less than seven or eight hours will worsen the quality of health and shorten life? But a recent research on sleep duration and mortality relationship shows that those who usually rest for five hours every day have good survival rate.

The study by scientists at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine for 14 years against the 450 female respondents aged 50 to 81 shows that those who have a habit of sleeping for five to 6.5 hours have quite a long life.

The latest study published the Sleep Medicine journal is different from previous research reports. Earlier this year, a large-scale study in the United States indicate that less than seven hours of sleep is associated with the risk of heart disease. The study even mentioned that those who slept less than six and a half hours are more likely to die before the age of 65.

“What is surprising is when sleep is measured objectively, the best survival among women is from those who slept for 5 to 6.5 hours. Women who slept less than five hours or more than 6.5 hours are less likely to survive for 14 years of research, “said Daniel Kripke, professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, according to the Telegraph.

In his research, Daniel and his team did a different approach. They did not do sleep measurements, such as by monitoring activities like previous researches. However, they prefer interviews revealing the habit of sleeping on the respondent.

Prof. Kripke says that this research could have dispelled fears of those who feels they don’t get enough sleep. “This means that women who slept only five to 6.5 hours do not have to worry anymore because the amount of sleep is proven consistent with an excellent survival,” he said.
