9 Causes of Constipation
Experiencing hard stools, irregular difficulty or frequency of bowel movements, usually less than three times a week, are some signs of constipation. This issue is actually quite commonly experienced by people.
Constipation is divided into two types, namely primary and secondary constipation. Primary constipation is functional constipation or no organic abnormalities found in the body after examination. While secondary constipation is usually caused by other diseases.
Most people think less of fiber as the main cause of constipation, but there are many triggers of constipation, ranging from lifestyle, medicine, until complications of a disease. Here are some of them.
1. Lack of fluid
Lack of fluid consumption can cause the stool to become hard. Drink at least 8 glasses of fluids a day.
There are several studies that have linked chocolate with the occurrence of constipation, although in some people consumption of chocolate would help bowel movement. If you are a fan of chocolate, you can begin to reduce it.
3. Pregnancy and childbirth
Constipation is a problem that is often complained by pregnant women. Usually this condition will continue after delivery. Bowel movement disruption is due to the weakening of the muscles of the stomach or side effects of analgesics.
4. Too much meat
A diet low in fiber and high in fat such as meat, eggs or cheese can make the digestive process slower.
Vitamins generally will not cause constipation, but some types of components such as calcium and iron could be a trigger.
6. Pain relievers and antidepressants
Research shows people who experience frequent constipation mostly are long-term pain relief drug users. Constipation is also associated with antidepressants class of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Hypothyroidism will slow the body and intestine’s metabolic processes. Not all hypothyroid sufferers will experience constipation but usually doctors will ask chronic constipation patients to check the levels of thyroid.
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause nerve damage that affects the body’s ability to digest food.
9. Lack of exercise
Less mobile lifestyle can also trigger constipation. Do physical activity at least 30 minutes every day.
