There are many health benefits of eating vegetables. Previously, it was known that parsley helps fight breast cancer. And because of health benefits reason, parents hopes their children consumes lots of vegetables. But, persuading children to eat a lot of vegetables is often not easy. Therefore, a good strategy is needed to increase the appetite for vegetable consumption.
Based on a report in the Register Guard, a research team from the University of Oregon in the U.S. recommended to keep soft drinks or other sugary drinks away when children are eating. Replace those drinks with water.
Researcher T Bettina Cornwell and Anna R McAlister examined the eating and drinking habits of 60 adolescents aged 19-23 years old. Those who consume soda have much more calories than those who consume soda and vegetables.
In a study published in the ‘Appetite journal’, researchers also made observations on the eating habits of 75 children aged 3-5 years old. They compared the quantity of vegetable intake when children were given a glass of soda and water.
The result showed that children tend to eat more vegetables such as carrots or red peppers, when they are given a drink of water. Vegetable consumption motivation is lower when confronted with a sweet colored drinks.
Cornwell concluded that water intake increases the desire to eat vegetables. “Our simple recommendations based on these studies is to serve water while eating,” he said.
