Be careful, use of shampoo could cause cancer!
Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and hand wash is a series of products that contain chemicals that you always use every day. Without you knowing it, these materials can slowly lower your body’s health. It could even cause cancer and liver disease.
A study reported by dailymail found that triclosan, an active chemical ingredient in the products is capable of causing adverse effects to health in the long run.
Triclosan, similar in its uses and mechanism of action to triclocarban, is an antibacterial and antifungal agent found in consumer products, including soaps, detergents, toys and, surgical cleaning treatments. Its efficacy as an antimicrobial agent and the risk ofbacterial resistance remain controversial.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that triclosan is capable of causing liver fibrosis and cancer in mice that became the object of research.
Liver fibrosis is the scarring process that represents the liver’s response to injury. In the same way as skin and other organs heal wounds through deposition of collagen and other matrix constituents so the liver repairs injury through the deposition of new collagen.
Over time this process can result in cirrhosis of the liver, in which the architectural organization of the functional units of the liver becomes so disrupted that blood flow through the liver and liver function become disrupted. Once cirrhosis has developed, the serious complications of liver disease may occur, including portal hypertension, liver failure and liver cancer.
The risk of liver cancer is greatly increased once cirrhosis develops, and cirrhosis should be considered to be a pre-malignant condition.
Cirrhosis and liver cancer are now among the top ten causes of death worldwide, and in many developed countries liver disease is now one of the top 5 causes of death in middle-age.
Liver fibrosis is an inflammation in the fibrous tissue located around the cells and blood vessels of your heart. If left unchecked fibrosis is capable of causing liver cirrhosis which can make it stop functioning.
Cirrhosis itself is a result of advanced liver disease. It is characterized by replacement of liver tissue by fibrosis (scar tissue) and regenerative nodules (lumps that occur due to attempted repair of damaged tissue). These changes lead to loss of liver function. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcoholism, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and fatty liver disease, but has many other possible causes. Some cases are idiopathic (of unknown cause).
“Triclosan itself is antiseptic substances. However, these chemicals have been under the supervision of food and drug regulatory agency (FDA) for allegedly able to disrupt hormones and impair the health of muscle contraction,” wrote the study.
In addition to in anti-bacterial shampoo, triclosan is also commonly found in hand soap or hand sanitizer.
