Beware, Your Beauty Products May Contain Toxic Ingredients
What does one really look out for when buying a beauty product? Some consider brand, shade, colour, fragrance, price etc. But, how many of us flip the product and read the ingredients on the labels before purchasing a product. When you use a particular beauty product, the ingredients are absorbed into your skin and interact with your body. Therefore, one must be very careful about these ingredients as some of them could be harmful. Watch out for these chemicals in your beauty products.
Parabens are used in a number of products as they act like preservatives to prevent growth of bacteria in cosmetic products. This chemical is usually found in make up, deodorants, shampoos and lotions. But one should note that parabens have been linked to breast cancer.
Sulfates are used in a number of foaming products like shampoos, body wash, shower gels etc. However, this product is known to cause skin and eye irritation along with kidney and lung damage when combined with other harmful chemicals.
Terms that begin with “F&DC” or D&C represent artificial colour. These letters are usually followed by a colour and a number. These artificial colours are sometimes derived from coal tar or petroleum sources. Once absorbed in the body they are suspected to be a human carcinogen and skin irritant.
Formaldehyde is also used as a preservative in many products to prevent bacterial growth. However, this ingredient has been linked to cancer and can harm the immune system and can also cause skin reactions. Formaldehyde is found in nail polish, conditioners, eye shadow etc.
