Salt is an essential mineral for health. But whats currently happening is that people consume too much amount of salt which eventually trigger many diseases. But can people live without consuming salt?
For people who have high blood pressure disorders or diseases such as stroke, salt intake must be limited so it does not aggravate the condition.
As a result, many people are now campaigning to avoid salt. But the truth is that our body still need salt because naturally people can not live without salt.
“Salt is the most essential substance for health. This is because the body can not make it and the body cells needs salt to function optimally,” says Aryan Aiyer, MD, director of the heart center at the Magee-Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh, according to MSN.
Institute of Medicine recommends people to consume half a teaspoon of salt each day to get sufficient levels of sodium for the body. Sodium is an electrolyte that helps maintain muscle function and hydration. That also is the reason why sports drinks usually contain sodium.
Naturally, someone will continue to lose sodium through sweat and urine. If sodium levels are not replenished, then there is a possibility that the blood pressure will drop which could make a person feel dizzy and see stars.
“Sodium in the body act like a sponge, that is to help the fluid to remain in your blood,” said Rikki Keen, RD a nutrition instructor at the University of Alaska.
If someone consume too much water, then the levels of sodium can decline and will make someone suffer from hyponatremia (low sodium levels). This condition could endanger health and even life.
So salt is needed by the body in order for it to function optimally. But one thing which should be kept in mind is that you should consume salt as needed and do not overdo it.
