Chemicals in Cosmetics Causes Breast Cancer?

January 16, 2012 By: Jane Category: Cancer

chemical cosmetics breast cancerMost women could not be separated from their cosmetics. It can be said that for a long time, women and cosmetics have been ‘ best friends’. This sounds very natural, but it seems that women should be more careful with cosmetics because there are possibilities that it could hurt them.

If previously, it was known that women who has breast implant are at risk of cancer, many women do not know that many cosmetic products uses chemicals that can increase the risk of breast cancer.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, there had been several studies since 1998 that had found that parabens substance found in cosmetics have a role to increase the potential of breast cancer because the chemical have estrogenic properties like estrogen. The estrogen hormone itself is known to have an important role in the growth and development of women’s breast.

Parabens or para-hidroksibezoat acid is widely used in cosmetics to make the  cosmetics long-lasting because they are able to resist the growth of microbes on cosmetics. Typically, parabens are found in everyday products such as bath moisturizers, cosmetics, shaving foam, tanning lotions, and toothpastes. These chemicals are also found in deodorants. Also, processed foods such as sausages, and pastries that are tasty.

The most common parabens in cosmetic products are methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Meanwhile, those that are not commonly found is benzylparaben and sobutylparaben. These substances can be found on product packaging.

The team of researchers led by Dr. Philippa Darbre from Reading University studied tissue samples from 40 British women who underwent mastectomy between 2005 and 2008 for breast cancer.

160 samples were collected, four samples from each respondent. The research team also found 99 percent of tissue samples containing at least one type of paraben, and 60 percent of the sample containing five types of parabens.

The research team found women who do not use deodorant, still has parabens in their tissues. The assumption is that the parabens entered from other sources.

“The research is done to confirm the view that there is no simple cause and the relation between parabens in deodorants to breast cancer,” says co-author Mr Lester Barr of the University Hospital of South Manchester.

However, whats interesting is that the research found that parabens in women with breast cancer who had not usesthe product on their armpit. “But where did these chemicals enter from?”

However, the fact of parabens in breast tissue could not be ascertained as the cause of breast cancer. “However, this could be the basis of further research,” said Dr Darbre.

Responding to the study, Catherine Priestley, a breast cancer care experts say, “The debate about the relationship of parabens with breast cancer is not something new. But this research increasingly supports the need for further research.”

The presence of parabens substances in cancerous breast tissue is not yet proven due to the use of beauty products. So it is not yet confirmed weather the parabens that causes breast cancer are from cosmetics. “But definitely, breast cancer can arise due to an increase in age, gender, and family history of breast cancer,” she said.
