The Combination of Turmeric and Chemotherapy Drug is Capable to Cure Colon Cancer
Alternative medicine to treat cancer had long been known by the medical world. This also could be applied on colon cancer. In a previous research, it was known that ginger lowers colon cancer risks. Now, a new study mentions the benefits of turmeric to treat colon cancer.
Giving curcumin which could easily be found in turmeric which is combined with chemotherapeutic drugs results 100 times better for the healing of colon cancer.
Colorectal cancer is the second largest cause of death from cancer in Europe. In fact, about 40,000 people have been diagnosed with colon cancer in Britain each year.
However, a study has found a chemical compound called curcumin in a curry, which will tested for their ability to kill tumor in colon cancer patients. These compounds are usually found in turmeric.
According laboratory testing, curcumin may fight the growth of cancer cells and also, its benefits has proven for patients with stroke and dementia.
Now the trial will be extended to 40 patients at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital, UK. This experiment will observe the effectiveness of the administration of curcumin in combination with chemotherapy drugs. Curcumin pill will be given to these patients for 7 days prior to standard chemotherapy treatment begins.
Prof. William Steward, who led the study, said that tests on animals showed a combination of both to be “100 times better” than when applied on their own.
“Once spread, colon cancer is very difficult to treat, partly due to chemotherapy side effects limits how long the patients can get treatment,” said Prof. William, according the BBC.
“However, the fact that curcumin can increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy treatment sounds appealing because it would mean chemotherapy drugs can be administered with lower doses, so patients have fewer side effects and can be treated longer.”
“However, this research is still in its very early stages, but exploring the potential of various chemical compounds from plants to treat cancer we expect may provide clues of the development of new drugs in the future,” he said.
Previously it was known that consuming foods with high fiber could reduce colon cancer risks. It is also known that diet is associated with the risks of colorectal cancer.
