In this study, they studied the health patterns of active smokers aged 40 to 60 years old, for four weeks. 16 participants were given a red apple, the other 17 participants were supplemented with polyphenols, and 18 others were given a placebo containing no polyphenols.

The researchers found no effect of placebo to decrease LDL levels. While the effect given by the polyphenol supplementation did not work as well as apples.
