Until now, researchers continue to figure out the best way to cure Alzheimer’s disease. This time, they use a type of tool that will be implanted in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
“The failure in trials using drugs forced us to look for other alternatives,” said researcher Dr Paul B Rosenberg, as reported by the Huffington Post (12/12).
“But this is a different approach. We will try to improve brain function in a way that is very mechanical,” adds the professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In these experiments, researchers will put the device in the brain. The device works by sending low electrical voltage charge to the brain.
For this study there will be at least 40 Alzheimer’s patients given implants in their brains. The device will be activated in some groups two weeks after installation. Meanwhile, other groups are activated two years later. This is done to determine the effect of implant planting earlier or later.
Formerly a study has been carried out by implanting an implant in six Alzheimer’s patients. As a result, researchers knows that there is increase in glucose levels. While Alzheimer’s disease is associated with decreased levels of glucose metabolism.
Trial in Parkinson’s patients, with similar methods, also showed a positive effect. Implant was able to reduce vibration and lower doses of their medication.Tagged with: Alzheimer's Disease, Alzheimer's disease brain implant,
