Dangers of Too Much Vitamin C
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient for the body. There are so many sources of vitamin C that can be obtained from a variety of fruits and vegetables. However, there are some side effects of too much vitamin C, is it dangerous for the body?
According to MayoClinic, vitamin C is water soluble vitamin that is beneficial for normal growth and development of the body. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron. Because, the body does not produce or store vitamin C, it is important to consume food sources of vitamin C.
For most people, a small glass of orange juice with strawberries and broccoli is enough to meet daily vitamin C intake. For adults, the recommended safe limit for vitamin C intake is 2000 milligrams (mg) per day.
If natural vitamin C through food are consumed too much, the effect will not harm the body. If you consume too much natural vitamin C, it will exit the body through urine.
However, if the intake of vitamin C is obtained from vitamin C supplements, especially in high doses, it can harm the body. Effects that you may suffer include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Heartburn
- Stomach cramps
- Headache
- Insomnia
- Kidney stones
If you experience this complaint, you should adjust the dose of the vitamin C supplements you consume. And try to drink more water.
