Detect Health Through Body Appearance

Health conditions of a person can actually be shown by visual clues given by the body. Some examples of the mediums that can be used to detect health problems are the tongue, urine, lips, eyes, nails, hair, or skin.

“Aging, wrinkles, dull nails, or hair loss, can be a clue to more serious health problems,” says Dr. Molly M. Roberts, health expert from the Institute Institute for Health & Healing, and president of the American Holistic Medical Association, as reported by Fox News.

It is not exaggerated to say that prime appearance reflects good health. Here are some physical signs that might give a clue of health problems.

1. Wrinkles
These aging symptom appear as you age. Although everyone will experience it, this condition can be a clue for osteoporosis. Recent studies shows a relationship between wrinkles and bone health, especially in women in early menopause.

The worse the condition of the skin wrinkle, the greater the risk of reduced bone density as a symptom of osteoporosis. Although the majority arise due to aging, wrinkle severity is also influenced by exposure to secondhand smoke and sunshine.

2. Leg swelling
There are actually many factors that could lead to swollen ankles. In addition to sprains, wounds, or infections, fluid retention in the lower body can also be triggered by pregnancy, obesity, or consumption of certain drugs. However, in some cases, this condition can also be indications of impaired cardiac pump function.

3. Nail color
Pay attention to your nail conditions, whether the color is pale, yellow, brown, blue, spotted, grooved, or perforated? This condition can be a sign of a number of serious diseases such as anemia, heart problems, diabetes, liver and nutritional deficiencies.

Yellow color of the nail can indicate respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, thyroid disorders, or swelling of the hands (lymphedema). In this yellow nail syndrome, nails thicken and growth will slow down, so the color changes.

4. Big hands and feet
Pay attention to the size of your hands and feet, are they proportional? If the size is greater than normal, maybe this is a classic sign of acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that occurs in adults due to the pituitary gland which causes too much growth hormone.

“This is included as a rare condition, and changes in bone and soft tissue usually runs slowly, so that the sufferer are often unaware of the hormonal disturbances in the body,” said Dr. Andrea Utz, director of the Vanderbilt Pituitary Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville.

5. Bad breath
If you had brushed your teeth correctly and taken care of gum health on a regular basis, but still  has a bad breath, well then If you experience it, you may need to raise awareness of heart problems. In the other hand teeth that are easy to shake could be a sign of osteoporosis or poor bone density.

6. Red face
People who experience red face, although they are not being shy or having a facial treatment may be symptoms of rosacea, a chronic skin disorder that is usually accompanied by the emergence of infections such as acne. Red hue comes from an enlarged blood vessels around the face. If ignored, could form lumps and make the nose grow round.

7. Dark skin
This usually appears around the back of the neck and is hard to remove even though had been rubbed with scrubs or scrub cream. This condition can be a sign of acanthosis nigricans, a condition where the skin appears darker and thicker, even resembling velvet folds along the body.

Those who potentially develop this condition are those with insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity or, cancer. “While it is not a certain clue, but immediate further investigation is needed if this condition is found,” said Heather Jones, a health practitioner at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland.
