Diet Soda Increase Risk of Stroke
Many soda lovers choose to consume diet soda so that they do not get fat. But a study conducted in America found that daily intake of diet soda causes the risk of heart attack and stroke becomes doubled.
The study, published in the ‘Journal of General Internal Medicine’, found that adults who drink diet soda every day are 44 percent more likely to experience a heart attack. While those who never or rarely consume diet soda has a 22 percent risk of having heart problems.
Yet researchers say sugar-free drinks are not the only reason for the occurrence of cardiovascular problems. “We see an association of people having unhealthy habits,” he told FoxNews.
Hannah Gardener, of the ‘University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’ and his colleagues analyzed 2,564 adults in New York aged 69 years at the early study. Over the next decade, 591 men and women had a heart attack, stroke or died of cardiovascular causes. As many as 31 percent, 163 people drank diet soda daily at study entry.
They found that diet soda consumed every day makes the drinker prone to cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes and unhealthy cholesterol levels. Gardener said that diet soda contribute to health risks by an unknown mechanism.
Several studies in rats have shown artificial sweeteners increase food intake and body weight, but in humans is not known. Gardener notes that further studies is needed to confirm the relationship between diet soda and cardiovascular problems.
