Many people believe that drinking beer can make your belly fat, or often known as “beer belly“, this appears especially in aged people, and especially in men. But does beer really make someone’s stomach become fat?
Apparently not all beer drinkers have a beer belly, because these conditions are also influenced by other factors including lifestyle and how often the person does physical activity.
One factor that can make a person have a beer belly is a result of to much calorie intake, thus changing the size of their waist. Calories that gets into the body can come from drinking beer, sweet drinks or large portions of food that can increase the fat in the belly.
“In general, alcohol intake is associated with bigger waists, because when you drink alcohol, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat,” says Michael Jensen, MD, an endocrine expert and obesity researcher with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, according to WebMD.
Beer are often blamed because alcohol calories are so easy to overdo. Typical beer has 150 calories and if you down several in one sitting, you can end up with serious calorie overload. Besides that, calories from food consumed along with beer also contribute to the accumulation of fat in the abdomen.
When someone consume more calories than they release, then the excess calories will be stored as fat. This is influenced by age, sex and hormones. Because more women store fat on the arms, thighs, buttocks and bellies, whereas for men store more in their bellies.
Fat which accumulates in the belly is associated with various health problems, ranging from type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure to cardiovascular disease. Because of that, excessive beer consumption not only affects the nerves in brain, but the calories contained in it can make a person have a beer belly.
