When you see children eat soil, parents maybe should not need to be too worries. A study says, soil or mud is good for stomach. Eating soil or geophagy is actually an ordinary thing for some people. Culture of eating soil is also found in several countries.
Researchers from Cornell University in New York studied 480 people who loves to eat soil. In the study, which was revealed in The ‘Quaterly Review of Biology’, it was found that soil can protect the body from parasites and toxins. In addition to protection from toxins, the soil is also rich in minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium.
According to head of the research, Dr. Sera Young, geophagy humans originated from Hippocrates more than 2,000 years ago. “We hope that readers no longer find those who eats soil or mud strange,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.
In general, people eat soil when food supplies are running low. When consuming soil, they only eat small amounts. Sera Young hope sthis study will encourage other scientists to investigate this matter of eating soil further.
