Effective Way to Reduce Drowsiness While Driving
People who are driving a car or a motorcycle often feels sleepy on the road. When they are struck by drowsiness, they usually will pull over to get a nap or drink a cup of coffee – that contain caffeine to reduce drowsiness the feel. The best thing to do to kill the feeling of sleepiness is to do both, not just one of them. This is a conclusion of a study written by Anahad O’Connor in The New York Times.
Usually, experts recommend people to stay away from coffee and other stimulants before driving because caffeine is considered to disturb sleep. The study of drowsy drivers is done by comparing the sleepy driver who rests to sleep and the group who rests for a cup of coffee.
The researchers found that sleeping for 15-30 minutes can improve alertness and performance in driving. But more studies suggests people to combat the sleepiness by drinking coffee.
However, from a series of studies, researchers in England found that drinking coffee and then followed by sleeping for 15 minutes is the most effective way to combat drowsiness. Researchers tested a sleepy driver in a simulator. They found that the combination of coffee drinking and15 minutes of sleep improves the performance and reduce drowsiness of the drivers better than commonly used techniques – such as cooling the air, taking a nap, resting without sleeping, drinking about 200 milligrams of “brewed” coffee.
This method is believed to be powerful because sleeping for 15 minutes help clear the brain from adenosine compounds. Meanwhile, the caffeine takes about 20 minutes to begin to affect physiologically – effects such as a slap to wake people from sleeping.
So next time when you feel sleepy while driving, have a cup of coffee and continue with a 15 minutes of deep sleep, because it is an effective way to beat the driver drowsiness.
