The ability of hand sanitizers to kill germs is not as powerful as imagined. Its use must be repeated, because in just 2 minutes  germs could already be on you hands again.

This appeal is related to a survey results submitted by Healthpoint, a company that markets wound care products.  In the survey, it is revealed that 50 percent of Americans thought the effects of hand sanitizers last 30 times longer than the actual duration.

According to NY Dailynews, the assumption was triggered by the excessive promotion by the producers. Some hand sanitizer products even claim by the manufacturer can give protection up to 6 hours after consumption.

“Hand sanitizer that contains 60 percent alcohol will only protect the hands for 1 or 2 minutes so it should be reused every time there are contamination,” said Dr. Philip Tierno Jr., PhD, imunolog from NYU Langone Medical Center.

According to him, the most powerful way to protect hands from contamination of bacteria and other germs is to wash hands with soap. Hand sanitizers should only be used under conditions where soap and running water are not available.

However, the use of hand sanitizers is still considered better than not using anything at all, especially if the hands are often in contact, including shaking hands with many people. Without using any cleaner, Dr Philip advised not to touch face and food at all.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that not all bacteria can be killed with a hand sanitizers. Nevertheless, the advantages of these products is to provide quick action to protect the hands from germs when soap and water are not available.
