Fight Bad Cholesterol with Red Onion
Do you have a high level of Bad cholesterol (LDL)? If you do then you should increase your consumption of red onions. This type of onion which have a distinctive flavor can help reduce levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, which if not controlled can lead to heart attack or stroke.
Red onions also maintain good cholesterol in the blood that helps protect the body against heart disease. The research was conducted by scientists in Hong Kong that gives red onions that have been destroyed to hamsters who eat foods high in cholesterol.
They found after eight weeks, the bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood of these hamsters decreased an average of 20 percent. However, during that same time period there was no decrease in the level of good cholesterol (HDL).
“Although there are many studies on onions, little is known about how they interacts with the consumption of human genes and proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism. The study was conducted to characterize the interaction between the onions with the enzyme in an effort to explore the mechanisms underlying the decline in cholesterol, “said Zhen Yu Chen, a researcher from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
“This result support the claim that consumption of red onions on a regular basis can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease,” he added.
Red onions are known to have many benefits for health. Not only reduce the risk of heart disease, some researches also showed that onions can prevent cancer, cope with cough and fever.
