Getting Married Has Many Health Benefits for Men
Research on the relationship between marriage and men’s health had already been done since the beginning of the year 1858 conducted by William Farr, a British epidemiologist.
Marriage and its benefit to the health of men is very closely related and there should not be doubted. Getting married will reduce levels of cortisol stress hormones, thereby reducing the possibility of men affected by chronic illness and make someone live healthier longer.
The cortisol hormone may accelerate the formation of arterial plaque that will lead to atherosclerosis and heart disease. In addition, stress is also associated with various health problems that promote inflammation and can trigger autoimmune disease.
A study was conducted in 1996 with the title ‘Marital Status and Mortality: The Role of Health’ which is about the relationship between marriage and men’s health.
It is mentioned that married men aged 50-70 years had a lower death rate than people who are not married.
This in because men who are married tend to be less involved in risky behaviors such as consuming alcohol and also not taking care of themselves. Also if they already have children, they will behave more healthy.
“Although marriage can make someone very stressful, but it will be easier for the person to handle stress in their lives,” said Dario Maestripieri, a professor of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, according to AskMen.
Based on the research, it is known that marriage potentially could affect many aspects of one’s lifelike the tendency to take risks, psychomotor function and cognitive coordination and performance.
Other findings from Dr. Fhionna Moore, a psychologist from Abertay University found that low cortisol levels would make men become more attractive to women. In addition, marriage can also increase feelings of self-esteem, confidence, reduce anxiety and depression.
