Ginseng, A New Way to Prevent Cancer

July 17, 2012 By: Michael Category: Alternative Medicine

ginsengA wide range of ginseng drinks is recommended to increase stamina. Whether it’s ginseng coffee or ginseng tea. Apparently, the drink not only can maximize stamina, but it works more as a cancer preventive.

According to a new study, consuming American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) in high doses can reduce the risk of cancer usually caused by fatigue factors.

This extra consumption can be carried out for two months. The experts conducted a study on 340 cancer patients who received placebo, or 2,000 milligrams of ginseng in capsule form. The ginseng contain pure ginseng roots grown in the United States.

Within four weeks, pure ginseng will reduce fatigue. However, at week eight, cancer patients taking ginseng experience a significant increase in their healing.

Ginseng as a herbal medicine does not cause any side effects. Fatigue  commonly perceived in cancer patients, has been associated with increased cytokines immune system inflammatory  and the hormone cortisol caused by stress.

The active ingredient contained in ginseng, ginsenosides, have reduced cytokine associated with inflammation and help regulate cortisol levels.

“After eight weeks, we saw a 20 point increase in fatigue in cancer patients, measured on a standard 100-point scale fatigue. If we can improve the body’s systems with the use of ginseng, that is, ginseng is also very likely to prevent severe fatigue in the long run,” said Ph.D. researcher Debra Barton from the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.
