Hair BraidingThere are many kinds of style that people can make with their hair, and one of them is by braiding it. But it turns out this model can be quite harmful for the hair because it can cause permanent baldness if it lasts long

Experts believe that braided hair from the scalp to hair ends can cause permanent balding pattern. This hair model is increasingly getting popular in some countries.

A study conducted in South Africa and had been published in the British Journal of Dermatology, involved nearly 2,000 adults and children who have this hairstyle. It is known that hair follicles are exposed to braid in a long term could possibly be damaged and will never recover.

Researchers found that nearly 1 in 7 children and a third of adult women experience traction alopecia, which is a type of hair loss caused by continuous pressure on the hair.

“Traction Alopecia is a common condition that exist in women and children and significantly correlated with hair styles like braids and extensions,” said Dr Nonhlanhla Khumalo, who led the study, according to BBC News.

Dr Khumalo said that it can cause hair loss. This problem is also found in hair styles where the hair is pulled back and tied.

Some hair style does look fashionable, but this hairstyle can cause hair to fall out permanently so it would have a huge effect on a person’s self confidence.

“The best thing is to identify problems early on. If it is done for a long time then the hair follicles can be permanently damaged and can not grow hair anymore,” said Dr Andrew McDonagh from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

A Clevelend Clinic dermatologist said that over time, the bulge or lump on the scalp due to pressure can develop bacteria that eventually may lead to injury or scarring.
