Uncontrolled blood sugar can affect the kidneys (diabetic neuropathy). As a result, the kidneys can not produce enough erythropoietin, a hormone that controls red blood cell production.

According to Lifemojo, one of the main function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen and if the number of red blood cells is lacking, then the amount of oxygen supplied to the body organs will be lower as well, causing anemia.

Besides that, diabetes and high blood sugar also affects the nerves that inhibit the production of erythropoietin in response to anemia.

Not only that, people who have diabetes often suffer from malnutrition which in turn causes anemia. People with type-1 diabetes also have an increased risk of acquiring autoimmune disorders such as celiac disease and pernicious anemia (vitamin B12 deficiency) that causes low blood count.

Medication is also one of the causes of anemia. Drugs used in the treatment of diabetes and hypertension can usually lead to the risk of anemia.
