How much salt intake could be said as too much? Are you among those who like the taste of salt? Or are you the type which will refuse salt by reason of a diet?

Too much intake of salt and completely does not consume salt are both equally dangerous. According to Interventional Cardiologist consultant, Vijay Surase, salt is considered by many as an important part of the diet. On the other hand, awareness about the dangers of excessive salt consumption has increased, as evidenced by a row of shelves in a supermarket filled with food product contains little salt or unsalted. The next question, how important is salt for the body?

“Salt in general, consist mainly of sodium and chlorine. Sodium chloride is very important to maintain osmotic balance and other functions. It is true that salt can be dangerous to some people and it is also true that sodium chloride can be obtained from other foods,” explains Dr. Surase, according to the Times of India.

However, he added, research shows that approximately 80 percent of the human population really will benefit from the consumption of natural sea salt, with a texture which is less refined than table salt and does not contain additional compounds such as aluminum.

“Unless you are told specifically by your doctor to limit or stop the intake of salt, then it should be obeyed because it can lead to complaints, such as drowsiness, depression, seizures, even coma,” he said.

Dr Surase added, hypertension patients should not be afraid to consume salt. Normal amounts of salt intake is not a problem, but do not consume excessive levels of your diet, like eating fries, snacks, and so forth.

Interventional Cardiologist Dr Shantanu Deshpande says that salt is very important to maintain homeostasis (a stable environmental conditions) in our body.

“The normal needs of salt is only 500 mg a day, but most people consume beyond the limit. Usually, excessive salt consumption goes out through the urine. But in nearly 50 percent of individuals, the kidneys can not handle excess sodium in the salt,” he said.

Dr Deshpande say that excess salt water than water in the bloodstream will increase the volume and blood pressure, also resulted in hypertrophy (cell enlargement) of heart muscle and blood vessels that lead to permanent increase of blood pressure. Those effects, he added, occurs much in the elderly and people with diabetes.

Reduce salt intake in the diet can reduce your blood pressure. Low intake of approximately 5 g of salt per day is recommended for patients with high blood pressure which should avoid foods such as cheese, processed foods, and junk food.

Interventional Cardiologist Senior Dr Rajiv Bhagwat explained the importance of salt intake for blood pressure regulation.

“Reducing salt intake is one of the most important and effective lifestyle modification of theĀ  to reduce blood pressure0. 2 mm decrease in blood pressure means also the decrease in the incidence of stroke by 10 percent and 7 percent reduction in deaths from coronary heart disease,” he said.

In addition to lowering blood pressure, he said, the reduction of salt also reduces hypertrophy, reduce loss of protein in urine, reduce osteoporosis and bone mineral loss with age, to protect the body from the dangers of gastric cancer, asthma, and cataracts.
