Lack of vitamin D decrease physical abilities in old ageWe all know that vitamin D is quite important for our body. The most important properties from this vitamin that is most famous is its ability to strengthen human bones. This vitamin is very important for the strength and formation of our bones.

There are many health benefits of vitamin D for the human body. There are even some benefits that most of you probably have not known before. Well, according to chatelaine, there are five health benefits of vitamin D that might even surprise you, here they are:

1. Improves muscle function
You may not know this, but vitamin D in the body are related with the muscle functions. If in case you have chronic pain, then you may want to reassess your vitamin D levels.

A new study reveals for the first time a relation ship between vitamin D and muscle function. This also show how vitamin D could affect recovery of the muscles after exercise and daily activities. Besides that, this also explains why lack of vitamin D can cause fatigue in the body. A quite similar study conducted with adolescent girls proved that vitamin D is positively related to muscle power, force, velocity and jump height.

So if you have problems regarding your stamina and feel fatigue on the muscles, you might want to increase vitamin D intake.

2. Suppress appetite
Humans produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays in bright sunlight. The increase of vitamin D levels could enhance our immune system, but besides that great benefit, the increase of vitamin D levels in our body can also activate the production of leptin, a protein hormone that can help people slim down by providing signals to the brain and stomach.

A research conducted by scientists at the Aberdeen University found that people who get adequate level of sunlight are able to reduce obesity risks. This study examined more than 3,100 post-menopausal women living in northeast Scotland for two years. From the study, they found that women who had lowest amounts of vitamin D in their blood also had the highest BMI. Therefor, don’t hesitate to do activities under the sun if you want to have a slim body.

3. Protect lung function
Getting vitamin D from the sunshine not only will help you feel better, but it will also make you breathe easier as well. Based on a recent research conducted by researc hers in Boston, lack of vitamin D is related with bad lung function and more rapid decline in lung function over time in smokers. This study shows that vitamin D could protect against some of the effects of smoking on lung function. Of course the best protection would be not to smoke, but if you are a smoker vitamin D could help.

4. Help you lose weight
Vitamin D is known to have many benefits for our health, it could lower insulin, improve serotonin levels, enhance the immune system, control appetite and even improve fat-loss efforts.

Well, a study done by researchers at Massey University showed that women who received a daily dose of 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 showed improvements in their insulin resistance after six months of supplementation.

In another research conducted by the University of Minnesota found that higher vitamin D levels in the body at the start of a low-calorie diet improved weight-loss success. Scientists determined that as vitamin D increased in the blood, subjects ended up losing almost a half-pound more on their calorie-restricted diet.

5. Lower blood pressure
A study conducted in 2012, which was presented at the European Society of Hypertension meeting in London, shows that vitamin D supplementation is able to help lower blood pressure in people who suffer from hypertension. While additional research found that vitamin D deficiency in premenopausal women may increase the risk of developing high blood pressure even 15 years later – certainly a great reason to your levels optimized today for healthy aging.

Lack of vitamin D decrease physical abilities

Besides the benefits you can get from vitamin D today, you should also know that vitamin D could affect your health as you get older. Not getting enough vitamin D can cause health problems in old age. A study showed that elderly people with vitamin D deficiency had physical function problems such as difficulty in walking around the house when compared with people who consume enough vitamin D.

“Seniors who have low levels of vitamin D have problems such as difficulty moving body functions. They will experience a decline in function of the body with age,” said lead researcher Evelien Sohl of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, as reported by NBC News (17/07) .

It is quite worrying to hear that according to researchers, most seniors or elder people (which is about 90%) lack vitamin D. This sure is very worrying because we know that vitamin D helps maintain muscle and bone health and prevent bone loss such as osteoporosis, while these disease could be worse in elder people. Vitamin D itself can be obtained from many sources, besides from sunlight, vitamin D can also be obtained from foods such as oily fish, mushrooms, eggs, and milk.

The results of this study were found after researchers observed 762 people aged 65 to 88 years and 597 men aged 55 to 65 years. They were observed for six years and questioned about their activity and the level of vitamin D in the blood.

Researchers found that in the first group of seniors, the low levels of vitamin D leads to an increased risk of physical problems as much as 1.7 times more. While in the younger group is double the risk. Researchers also found that problems began to emerge after three years in the oldest group and six years in the younger group.
