Losing Weight Prevents Breast Cancer

It turns out that Losing weight can reduce a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer. Research has shown that overweight women who shrank 5 percent of their body weight, have 50 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Breast cancer itself is known as a dangerous cancer originating from breast tissues, which occurs more in women than in men. The main symptom of breast cancer is usually felt by a lump on the breast area that feels different from the rest of the breast area.

The study of 439 women aged 50-75 years old prove that loss of body fat reduce levels of hormones that trigger cancer growth. During the study, women were divided into four groups. One group performed exercise and diet, the second groups just a diet, the third group exercised more frequently, while the fourth group did not change their lifestyle.

According to FoxNews, the result of the showed that women who managed to lose 5 percent of body weight have 50 percent lower risk of having cancer. Scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute discovered that women who performed diet and exercise can lower the average weight loss of 10 percent.

In addition, all women who are able to lose weight have lower levels of estrogen and testosterone which are 10-20 percent lower than women are overweight or obese. The estrogen hormone is associated with breast cancer or called receptive hormones or are found in 70 percent of cases of breast cancer.

Lead researcher Anne McTiernan reveals that losing 5 percent of body weight reduces the risk of a quarter to a half times of  the most common breast cancer. “Weight loss is the key to changing hormone levels,” she said.

Diet and exercise, said McTiernan, has the greatest impact in preventing breast cancer. “I advise women to go on a diet and to perform exercise, because in the long run that will help keep the weight down and therefore keep the estrogen down.”

Eating a lot of vegetables also gives many benefits. It was previously known that vegetables can extend the age of cancer patients.

Eluned Hughes from the Breast Cancer Foundation says, “We strongly support the benefits of maintaining a healthy weight because it can help reduce a woman’s risk of breast cancer.”

An early study also reveals that women who are overweight or obese when diagnosed with breast cancer are more likely to have a relapse and dies from the disease than those who are thinner.

Research mentions that there is a risk of recurrence by 17 percent in patients who are obese compared to 8 percent in those with ideal body weight. Women should also avoid wine, because it is known that consuming a glass of wine can increase breast cancer risks.
