The argument was based on a survey done by the BUPA health institutions on 2,000 adults in the UK. More than half of participants who are medically categorized as obese believed that they had a normal body size.
According to the Dailymail, the researchers believe that the mindset can not be separated from the number of overweight people which far outnumbered the normal weight or underweight, with a ratio of 2:1.
Looking at the numbers of people with obesity which reaches 2/3 of the adult population in the country, many people then think that obesity is normal. Feeling stuck in a difficult condition to recognize a healthy body shape.
Unfortunately, they not only feel to have a normal body, but also believe that they have a healthy diet. In fact, survey results indicate unhealthy eating habits among those with obesity.
“This survey shows the normalization of obesity. People do not recognize they are obese or their children are obese and this is dangerous because its changes perceptions about being healthy,” said Dr Sneh Khemka, who led the study.
Similar results have also emerged in a survey in the United States. In a study in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as much as 25 percent of 2,000 women does not have problems with weight, although body mass index calculations showed the symptoms of obesity.
This mindset certainly is a threat to childhood obesity prevention campaign. Those who are overweight but feels slim tend not to have healthy lifestyles.
It is quite concerning. Remember, being overweight is not simply an aesthetic issue, but also health. Obesity increases the risk of a number of potentially dangerous diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
