child play video gamesIn their childhood, girls will grow up with dolls as one of their favorite toys. However, little girls today turned out to be more interested in computer games than dolls. The same thing happens to little boys who turn away from lego to modern gadgets and consoles such as iPods, Playstations and Xbox.

A study found, a list of child’s favorite toys have changed over the last 50 years. The research conducted by the firm E.ON was conducted on 2,000 children found electronic toys was introduced in the 1980s with the Nintendo Game Boy.

These toys are then developed into the modern game consoles like the Playstation by Sony, Xbox by Microsoft and Wii by Nintendo. Electronic toys had even become the most popular toys of children in the 21st century. Lego construction toys came in second with 18 percent of children which selected them as favorites. The third place is a doll which was chosen by 16 percent of children.

Children’s games activist Adrian Voce OBE, said that while not a favorite, dolls does not die completely. “The doll may no longer be a main toy for girls, but I do not see that they will be completely abandoned in the near future,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Children love to play by imitating the adult world and dolls allow them to do this,” Voce said.

Through dolls, children can play different people in real life or child fantasy and they can play parent figure. “The important thing is kids can really play.”

The study also found, the number of children who have a battery-operated toys increased three times more than in the 1950s, from 10 percent to 34 percent. In fact, board game experience the greatest decline of 12 percent in the 1950s to 3 percent in the 1990s.

According to experts, lack of time parents spend to accompany their child play underlies this trend. So it is easier for parents to leave their child in front of a screen rather than being involved in the game.

“It’s important not to label gadget as an evil thing, because children needs these devise to understand an increasingly computerized world. But do not let the child depend on the two-dimensional screen and lose interaction and motor skills and hand-eye coordination.”
