Omega-3 Have No Impact On Brain Performance?

July 26, 2012 By: Michael Category: Nutrition

omega 3 does not affect brain performanceOmega 3, the nutrient that can be obtained from eggs and fish oil, does not bring a significant effect on adults. Omega-3 is always associated with brain nutrients that help increase cognitive.

According to Health News Daily, the results of a recent study conducted on 3,500 adult respondents did not indicate an association between omega-3 and the brain, verbal fluency, or dementia.

The study lasted six to 40 months, participants were given omega-3 to measure their memory. Some participants were given omega-3 capsules containing seeds of sunflower and olive oil, while the other group consumed margarine also containing omega-3 to process each food.

In the cognitive test session by answering questions, the test results are less satisfying. It shows that the omega-3 did not show benefit for them.

In general, the researchers have seen a decline in cognitive function. Researchers will try to extend the time of the study, because they consider this study may be too short to access whether fish oil can prevent dementia or not.

Lynne Shinto, a professor of neuroscience at Oregon Health and Science University who specializes in the science of omega-3 also agrees with the extension of this study. The researchers also must consider genetic factors that may reduce dementia, or other diseases that lead to dementia such as diabetes in the participants.

The relationship between fish and omega-3 as a cognitive amplifier was found in previous observational studies, but how these fish provide a boost to the brain remains unclear.

Shinto further agreed that the omega-3 is more beneficial for heart health. This statement is also corroborated by other researchers. “There is no evidence that shows consuming fish oil has benefits for cognitive function later in life,” said Alan Dangour, a lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
