People Who Snores Are More At Risk of Death by Cancer
Are you a type of person who snores every night when you sleep? Well, if your are, you should know that a recent study revealed an association between snoring habits with cancer.
Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases, it can be loud and unpleasant. Snoring during sleep may be a sign, or first alarm, of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
From a study, scientists found out that compared to people who sleeps normally, people who experience mild snoring have a 0.1 percent risk of dying from cancer . Moderate snorers double the risk of dying from cancer. While in heavy snorers, the risk increases to 4.8 times.
The findings were based on data from sleep studies of 1,522 people over 22 years. Previous laboratory tests on rats also showed that lack of oxygen caused by snoring will trigger tumor growth.
Dr. Javier Nieto, leader of the study from the Faculty of Medicine and Public Health University of Wisconsin, said, “The evidence is consistent from animal experiments and new evidence from humans is very interesting.”
He added, “If the relationship between sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and cancer deaths are validated in further studies, diagnosis and treatment of SDB in patients with cancer may be indicated to prolong survival,” said Dr. Nieto as quoted by the Dailymail. Sleep disordered breathing is a significant physiologic changes in breathing take place during normal sleep related to alterations in respiratory drive and musculature.
This findingis obtained after the calculation of various factors including smoking, sex, age, and weight. Other findings in the research that is surprising is the presence of a stronger relationship in non-obese snorers.
The study was presented at American Thoracic Society international conference in San Francisco.
Many people around the world has this habit, not only in men but also in women. It is important for them to know what causes a woman to snore, so that they can find the solution to overcome the problem.
There are many theories provided on how to stop snoring habits. Previously it was even mentioned that wearing thigh high stockings can prevent snoring. Besides unique theories like that, it is also advised that sleeping sideways can reduce snoring.
