Pomegranate Juice Reduce Inflammation
Besides being a good source of antioxidants, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, pomegranates can also reduce inflammation. A preliminary study showed that pomegranates can prevent some complications of kidney disease patients on dialysis due to infections and cardiovascular events.
Batya Kristal, MD, FASN, along with Lila Shema, a PhD candidate, studied 101 dialysis patients who received pomegranate juice or placebo at the beginning of each session of dialysis, three times a week for one year.
Laboratory tests showed patients who drank pomegranate juice decreased inflammation and damage from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. While those who drank a placebo are more susceptible to infection than pomegranate juice. This finding supports other studies that showed pomegranate juice has potent antioxidant properties.
In addition, those who drank pomegranate juice also showed improvements in cardiovascular risk factors, such as reduced blood pressure, improved lipid profiles and fewer cardiovascular events, and have better heart health.
