Premature Birth – Weight of an Infant in Brazil is Only 0.3 Kg
Carolina Terzis could be the smallest baby in Brazil. When she was born in November, the daughter of Alexandra Terzis weighs only 340 grams with a length of 27 centimeters.
According to the Daily Mail, the infant who weighs less than half a kilogram was born prematurely, in Vila da Serra Hospital, near Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. Only five months in the womb of her mother who suffered eclampsia during pregnancy.
Eclampsia is a life-threatening condition that are susceptible to develops in pregnant women. Symptoms include, sudden increase of blood pressure and seizures.
Carolina survived. After undergoing intensive care for about five months, the tiny baby begins to develop normally. By weighing up to 3.28 kilograms, she was allowed to leave the hospital this week.
Carolina is still heavier than Rumaisa Rahman. When he was born on 19 September 2004, weighing only 244 grams. Lighter than a can of a soft drink.
Spokesman for Loyola University Medical Center Chicago, Sandra Martinez who handled the birth, explained that Rumaisa weighed 37 grams less than the previous record holder, who was born in the same hospital in 1989.
Rumaisa was a twins, his twin brother, Hiba, was born weighing 563 grams or twice the weight of Rumaisa. These twins were born when the mother’s womb age, was just 26 weeks or 6.5 months.
Hospital intensive care makes Rumaisa and Hiba grew up healthy. The two babies were allowed to go home the first week of January 2005 with a weight of 1.18 pounds.
There are many factors that could trigger the occurrence of premature birth. It is known that urban pollution increases premature birth rates.
