Saturated fat has long been regarded as the main enemy of human health because it triggers the clotting of blood vessels and increase the risk of heart attack. But in contrary, a recent studies dispute it.
There is one type of saturated fat called stearic acid, which is can protect the body from heart attacks, according to the study. Stearic acid can be found in red meat, pork, chicken without skin, olive oil, cheese, chocolate, and milk.
Meanwhile, other saturated fat is lauric acid, myristic, and palmitic. But only stearic acid which has a favorable effect on cholesterol and does not give any influence on the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Research at Pennsylvania State University also involved respondents to enjoy lean red meat for five weeks. As a result, their cholesterol levels dropped by five percent.
“Lean red meat is healthy, as long as the meat has not been processed into sausage or ham, saturated fat in it is actually good for the heart,” said Dr. Michael Roussell, head author of the study, as quoted by the Daily Mail (05/03).
In the UK, the health department recommends that women consume 20 grams of saturated fat, while men is 30 grams per day.
