There are millions of adults, middle-aged, and elders, who suffer from insomnia. If you are one of those who suffers from insomnia, you should try a new technique in order to sleep more soundly at night, try doing aerobics regularly. Aerobic exercise improves sleep quality, mood, and vitality, according to a new study by researchers at Northwestern, Chicago, United States.
This is the first study to examine the effect of aerobic exercise in middle-aged adults and elders who suffer from insomnia. Approximately 50 percent of people in this age group complained symptoms of chronic insomnia. This is worrying for men because some studies say that insomnia increase risk of death in men.
Aerobic exercise improves sleep quality of patients, including sleep duration, compared with other non-pharmacological interventions.
“Insomnia increases with age. Around middle age, sleep begins to change dramatically. It is very important for us to identify our behavior to improve the quality of sleep. Now we have showed promising results that aerobic exercise is a simple way to help people to sleep better and feel stronger, ” said Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern, and the author of this paper which will published in the October issue of the Sleep Medicine journal, according to Science Daily.
“By improving your sleep, you can improve your physical and mental health,” Zee said, who is also a doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
