Signs that a Baby is Dehydrated
From the various kinds of health risks that can be experienced by a baby, the problem of dehydration or loss of body fluids are rarely a major concern of parents when their children are sick. Parents should know that if dehydration is left unnoticed, it can be fatal.
Parents are usually less sensitive to the problem of dehydration because they think the baby can not be affected by dehydration. These thoughts arise because the baby is always given milk regularly.
But according to research conducted by St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India, and published in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics, even exclusive breastfeeding can cause dehydration in infants.
Therefore, it is important to know the signs of dehydration in infants. Well, here are some symptoms when a baby is dehydrated, according to Livestrong.
1. Excessive thirst
It’s a bit obvious, but if the baby feels s/he had less liquid they naturally will feel the urge to drink more. Babies may cry until given a bottle and then continue drink all the water, milk or juice. This is a sign of mild and moderate dehydration.
2. Looks unhealthy
Babies who looked weak and unhealthy may suffer serious dehydration, they should be given fluids and taken to a doctor immediately. It includes lack of energy, wantingto lie down all day and lack of emotion.
3. Loss of skin elasticity
Dehydration in infants can cause loss of skin elasticity. If you try to gently pinch the skin of your child and do not quickly return to its normal position, this could be a sign of dehydration. This happens because there are not enough water to reach the skin.
4. Dry and sticky mouth
Babies who are not properly hydrated often show symptoms of dry mouth. This can be accompanied by white saliva at the corner of the baby’s mouth.
5. Dry Diapers
Baby diaper certainly should not be dry for more than 5 or 6 hours. This can happen when a baby is dehydrated because the body uses less liquid to drink. Constipation is a similar symptom, although this may be the result of other things such as poor appetite or slow digestive system.
