smile benefitsNever underestimate the power of a smile. Although it sounds trivial, smiling provides positive influence for mental health. You could even detect health through a smile.

Based on a research published in the Psychological Science journal, a smile is proven to reduce stress and slow heart rate. Especially when you are in a difficult situation or depressed.

In the study conducted on 169 respondents, the experts divided them into three groups. Which are the group with a neutral expression, or flat, the standard smile, and the Duchenne smile or a sincere smile. To maintain the stability of expression, they were asked to put chopsticks in their mouth.

While maintaining their expression, participants were asked to do a series of very difficult things that might make them stress.

According to the Telegraph, when performing heart rate, it turns out that the group with a “smile” has a heart rate slower than the neutral expression.

“Smiling when facing bad things can reduce the intensity of the response to stress. It really helps the body to escape from what someone really feels,” explained Dr. Sarah Pressman, one of the experts involved in the study.

So, try to smile when facing a congestion or other annoying things, even for an instant. In addition to improving mood, smiling also helps get rid of your stress. It was also known that people who often smiles lives longer.
