Soda May Trigger Stroke
Consumption of soft drinks or soda had long been known to provide negative impacts for the human health. In a previous research it was even known that soft drinks causes aggressiveness in teenagers.
Well, clinical researchers from the Institute for Health clinic and Harvard University Cleveland found that consuming a lot of sugary drinks and low-calorie soda is associated with a higher risk of stroke. In contrast, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee have a lower risk.
The study, which was released in the ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ has become the first research that examines the effects of soda on the risk of stroke. Previous research has linked consumption of sweetened drinks that increases weight gain, diabetes, increased blood pressure, cholesterol, uric acid and coronary artery disease. It was even known that diet soda increase risk of stroke.
“Soda become a source of added sugar in a diet,” says author and Head of Research at the Cleveland Clinic health Institute, United States, Adam Bernstein, MD, Sc.D., according to Eureka.
They understand that the regular consumption of these beverages provide a chain reaction in the body that cause many diseases. Stroke becomes a threat.
Researchers analyzed the consumption of soda in 43,371 men who participated in the Advanced Studies of Health Professionals in 1986-2008. A total of 84,085 women were also examined in the Nurses Health Study program in 1980-2008. At that time, 2,938 women suffered a stroke and in men it was 1,416 cases.
In soft drinks that is added with sweeteners, the sugar content can dramatically increase blood glucose levels and insulin. These reactions result in the body can not tolerate glucose, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Every one of those is a risk factor for ischemic stroke. This threat is more severe for women than men.
For comparison, coffee contains chlorogenic acid, lignans, and magnesium. This content serves as an antioxidant and may reduce the risk of stroke. When compared with a serving of soda sweetened with sugar, a serving of decaffeinated coffee is associated to save 10 percent lower risk for stroke.
The findings from this study showed that men and women who consumed more than one serving of sugar-sweetened soda per day had higher blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and lower levels of physical activity.
People who often drink soda tend to eat red meat and dairy products. Men and women who ate low-calorie soda has the possibility of chronic illnesses and higher Body Mass Index (BMI). The investigation is to monitor the association of soda consumption on stroke.
“According to USDA research, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased dramatically in the United States for three decades. It affects health,” said doctor Bernstein. This discovery reminded the importance of seeking an alternative to soda drinks. Water can be a healthy choice. Previous research even mentioned that two glasses of sweet drinks could lead to a heart attack.
