Sperm Quality Declines After The Age of 40
Women are often encouraged to get married before the age of 40 years if they want to have children. The most common reason is the quality of eggs decreases when women are aged 40 years or more.
However, recent studies have shown, similar incidents are also experienced by men. The results of the analysis on patients in a fertility clinic showed that the odds of men aged 41-45 years to fertilize their wife drops by seven percent per year. The quality of male sperm are also found declining over time.
Lead researcher, Dr. Paula Fettback of ‘Huntingdon Reproductive Medicine Centre’ in Brazil said, “Men can not wait forever. After 45 years, they have to start thinking about having children. ”
The study results presented at the annual conference of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Florida analyzed 570 artificial insemination outside the body (in fitro fertilization) that are performed in the clinic of Dr. Fettback since March 2008 to April 2011. To ensure that the woman’s age does not affect this study, which eggs that are used in the study were only donated by young healthy women only. Research reveals that when they are 41 years old, the couple had only 60 per cent chance of conceiving.
“The results of our analysis also shows that each adding age of the husband, decreases the chances of pregnancy by seven percent,” said Dr.Fettback, according to the Telegraph. At age 45, her chances drop to 35 percent and dropped significantly after that.
A separate study conducted on mice showed the same indications. Namely, only 35 percent of male rats in middle age can make a female mice pregnant. This figure is much lower than the ability of young rats with the odds of 75 percent. Pregnancies by older mice also cause miscarriage.
However, according to Charles Kingsland, a gynecologist at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital who is also a member of the British Fertility Society, the results of research in Brazil must be addressed carefully. The reason is that the study was small.
Kingsland said that men produce fresh sperm every day. Women, he said, was born with a supply of eggs for her life, but the quality of the egg cells can be damaged due to poor eating habits and obesity.
“There are many advantages to become fathers at a younger age. First and foremost you have more energy. But to be a father at an older age also provides a number of advantages, such as stability, wise, and perhaps more financially secured, “says Kingsland.
