Strawberries Protects the Stomach from Alcohol Effects

October 28, 2011 By: Lisa Category: Alternative Medicine

strawberryConsuming strawberries can help you protect the stomach from the negative effects of alcohol. A research conducted by European scientists had revealed that a diet of fruits can prevent damage to the stomach lining from alcohol.

The study, published in the open journal ‘PlosOne’ also revealed that strawberries can prevent certain stomach diseases and contribute to the treatment of gastric tissue damage.

In their research the researchers fed ethanol in the two groups of rats and found that those who consumed strawberry extract for 10 days before given alcohol experienced less damage to the lining of the stomach, mucous membranes, or wounds in the stomach.

According to Serena Tulipani, researchers at the University of Barcelona, who is also one of the researchers on this study, “The positive effects of the strawberries are not only related to antioxidant capacity and high levels of phenolic compounds, but also because they activate antioxidant defenses, and the enzymes in the body.”

While Maurizio Battino, coordinator of the research team at the University Polytechnis Marche in Italy, said, “In this case the consumption of strawberries during or after the pathology can minimize damage to the mucous membranes of the stomach.”

However, continued Battino, this study should not be understood as a way to reduce the effects of being drunk, but rather as a way to find a molecule in the membrane that protects the stomach from the damaging effects or different agents.”
