Russia Tests HIV Vaccine

Can the virus infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) be prevented? This is the question which answer will be searched by the Center for Virology and Biotechnology, Vector, in Russia. The state-funded research center is trying to create a vaccine that can induce strong antibody (antigen).

“We have successfully completed the first phase of clinical trials of HIV vaccines,” said the head of Vector, Alexander Sergeyev. The vaccine is now awaiting approval to test the second stage. (more…)

HIV Drug Can Extend Life Expectancy

Life expectancy of people with HIV rose sharply for 15 years, from 1996 to 2008. That is, at least in England. This happens because those with HIV were able to get early diagnosis and better treatment with drugs with lower toxicity.

Although the life expectancy of HIV patients is still lower than the general population, but there is a significant advance in efforts to reduce drug side effects. Offering a combination of therapy and starting treatment early has helped transform HIV from a chronic disease with a good prognosis, said the researchers. (more…)
