Antidepressants drugs increase the risk of Cataracts
A study in Canada revealed that SSRI drugs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor-) which is used as antidepressants can increase the risk of cataracts about 15 percent.
The study did not prove that antidepressants cause cataracts. However, the widely prescribed drug was shown to pose a risk of vision problems in elderly patients. Increased risk of cataracts by 15 percent, resulting in 22 000 cases of cataract in the United States.
“This study shows for the first time that the use of SSRIs may be associated with an increased risk of developing cataracts,” said Mahyar Etminan PharmD and her partners from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in the conclusion of this study. (more…)
