The Danger Behind Two Glasses of Wine for Your Brain
The efficacy of wine is said to provide many health benefits. This drink can help lower cholesterol, prevent cancer, and is good for heart health. According to a research at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute in Ohio, it was even known that a glass of red wine a day can prevent and treat breast cancer. This is because of the resveratrol compound which is an infection-fighting antioxidant ingredient.
Wine itself is an alcoholic beverage produced from the fermentation of fruit. Plums, black currants, and grapes are most commonly used as the main ingredient.
However, a recent study from Rutgers Unviersity in the United States revealed about the dangers of consumption of two glasses of wine per day for brain health. Even moderate consumption are also able to decrease the production of brain cells by 40 percent. Explains Megan Anderson, author of the study, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“In the short term a problem and overall brain function, as well as motor functions might not seem to be a problem. Yet in the long-term, adverse effects of wine will strike the memory,” said Anderson.
The scientists also conducted a research in rats. In the group of rats which were given wine, their blood contains 0.08 per cent alcohol, and this very disturbs the brain cells. Alcohol also damage motor skill of the mice. The number of nerve cells in this hippocampus part of the brain was reduced by nearly 40 percent, compared with rats that did not consume wine at all.
“This is a substantial reduction in the number of brain cells, which from time to time have a profound effect for adults.”
