The Danger of Airport Body Scanners is Greater Than Suspected
Cancer risks due to radiation from the X-ray of body scanners at airports are quite dangerous. Radiation levels and its danger is far greater than previously thought, especially for children.
Although rays that are used only produces low levels of radiation, but the risk can not be underestimated.
According to experts, the X-rays could be concentrated in the skin (the most sensitive part of body to radiation) so that the levels of radiation can jump 20 times higher than previously suspected.
Dr. David Brenner of Columbia University said that health risks are higher in individuals who are more sensitive. Among them are children and people with a genetic mutation, because this group does not have the ability to repair DNA damaged by radiation.
Type of cancer which is most often occurs due to the use of X-ray at the airport is basal cell carcinoma. This type of skin cancer, is a type that can be cured, and often occur in the head and neck at the age of 50-70 years.
Dr. Brenner suggested that those parts of body should not be scanned. After all, he thinks it is not possible for someone to hide a dangerous weapon in the neck and head.
“If there are increases in cancers as a result of irradiation of children, they would most likely appear some decades in the future. It would be prudent not to scan the head and neck,” Benner said quoted from Dailymail.
Previously, the civil aviation authority (CAA) said that body scanning technology at airports are quite safe. If it is done according to procedure, a person can do it 5000 times a year without experiencing any health risks
