The Danger of Vitamin Overdose

taking vitaminMany people prefer to consume additional supplements to meet the nutritional needs for their body. Unfortunately, there is something that is often forgotten when people purchase these supplements or vitamins, which is the dose of each tablet.

Without any hesitation, many people often choose based only on the brand that is considered the best. Or simply by the fame of the brand, without thinking of how much the body actually needs the vitamins.

Nutritionist, Janis Jibrin from New York, who is also the writer of ‘The Supermarket Diet’ explanation on how many doses of each vitamin the body needs and effects of vitamin overdose or vitamin poisoning.

For vitamin A for example, is it true that vitamin A overdose can give dangerous effects, or what kind of vitamins and minerals that can cause overdose.

You are in a safe zone if you consume 100% daily value (DV) or the value per day of each vitamin and mineral. This is the daily value established by the Food and Drug Administration standards.

Some vitamins, like vitamin B and C are safe if taken beyond measure. But, you need to be alert to Vitamin A, vitamin E, iron, and zinc.

It turns out that Vitamin A should not be consumed more than 200% DV or 10,000 IU. Too much vitamin A actually increase the risk of bone fragility. It also causes damage to the nervous system and liver function.

Besides vitamin A, it was also mentioned that vitamin E could cause fragile bones.

Except in smokers, excess doses above 10,000 IU is considered harmless, with notes, sources of vitamin is obtained from beta-carotene and alpha carotene. Both are natural pigments that will be changed by the system of the body into good vitamin A.

What about vitamin E? Although it seems harmless, excess vitamin E can cause excessive bleeding. The bad effect is that the body will become easily tired. So far, the recommended dose is 100 Iu per day.

Vitamin E is much sought for beauty skin care, but note also the dose if you want to consume it.

While too much iron will give effect directly. Constipation and other stomach disorders can attack if you consume too much iron. More research is still needed regarding the long-term impact. Whether it can increase the risk of heart disease and cancer or not.

For women entering their menopause, it is recommended to fulfill the need of iron with a dose of 18 mg per day. While at menopause only 8 mg is needed.

One more minerals that has a devastating effect,zinc. When the body gets the excess intake if zink, the body’s ability to absorb copper will be disturbed. This causes a weakening of the immune system. The recommended dose is 15 mg per day only.

So, next time you take vitamins or other supplements, remember to take notice of the dose. Know also the side effects of healthy supplements.
