People who consume lots of salt and do a little exercise will experience a more rapid mental decline. Besides that, the consumption of more than 1 teaspoon of salt per day could lead to increased risk of senility and Alzheimer’s disease.
So far, people know the excess salt is bad for the heart, but this new study shows an association between the deterioration of brain health with the consumption of salt.
“The result is that high intake of sodium which is combined with a little exercise would be detrimental to cognitive performance in adult brain, especially the elderly,” said Dr. Alexandra Fiocco from the University of Toronto, according to the Dailymail.
High consumption of sodium here is if it more than 3,090 mg of pure sodium in a day or the equivalent of one teaspoon of salt (7.7 grams) per day. This condition is equal to 3 packs of chips or 3.5 servings of big burgers.
“This finding becomes important because it helps people to stay active and regulate their diet in order to maintain a healthy brain,” says Carol Greenwood, who is also from the University of Toronto.
Yet researchers have not found the exact mechanisms of how salt intake could lower cognitive abilities and lead to dementia. But this becomes an important point that a person needs to eat more fruits and vegetables and reduce processed foods.
Researchers assessed participants’ mental health by using a tool used in diagnosing Alzheimer’s. The results of these studies have been reported in the Neurobiology of Aging journal
