Becoming a vegetarian can be a big decision taken by a person related to their eating habits. Some people who become vegetarians have difficulty adapting and feeling constantly hungry. Is being a vegetarian is a decision that is right for you?

Before you decide to become a vegetarian, it is a good idea to consider some of the facts related to this habit. Research shows that becoming a vegetarian can reduce the risk of heart disease, as well as providing many benefits because you eat vegetables and fruit regularly and more often. Additionally, not eating meat can also be financially rewarding.

“In terms of health, being a vegetarian can be a very healthy choice,” said Lisa Young, a nutritionist at New York University. “Meat and cheese are high in saturated fat, and eliminating them from your diet can be very good for heart health.

To meet the needs of a normal protein provided by meat for the non-vegetarians, vegetarians can eat foods containing soy such as tofu, tempeh, whole grains and other nuts, and green leafy vegetables such as spinach or kale.

Even so, Young said that being a vegetarian is not the right step if you want is to lose weight. Being a vegetarian has nothing to do with losing weight. some vegetarians actually gain weight after deciding to leave meat.

Young gave some things to consider before you decide to become a vegetarian, as reported by the NY Daily News, here they are:

1. Planning everything
Prior to becoming a vegetarian, think about meat substitute foods that will meet daily nutrition. You can go to a nutritionist to consult on the nutrients you need. Speaking with a nutritionist is important if you have anemia or iron deficiency. Likewise with a pregnant vegetarian.

2. Do not be afraid to try
Being a vegetarian means you have to make friends with a lot of vegetables. So, do not be afraid to try eating new vegetables that you’ve never eaten before. Also with fruits. This will keep you from feeling bored because you can not eat meat.

3. Start slowly
Try not to eat meat for one or two days a week, then look at your circumstances. If you feel healthier or better, you can continue. But if you could not stand not being able to eat meat, you should think again of becoming a vegetarian.

4. Do not rely on packaged foods
Today many packaged foods are meat-free. But that does not mean that you can consume the food freely. Many meat-free packaged foods are not healthy because of salt and sugar in it. So better check the nutrition labels of food before consuming it. Safer if you keep eating foods and fresh vegetables.
