Besides its sweet taste, low in calories and rich in fiber, other benefits of watermelon are found again. The fruit is shown to lower blood pressure. According to research by the Florida State University, watermelon could be an effective natural weapon against prehypertension, the causes of cardiovascular disease.
Assistant Professor at Florida State University, Arturo Figueroa and Professor Bahram H. Arjmandi found that when six grams of L-citrulline/L-arginine amino acids from the extract of watermelon given daily for six weeks, it can improve artery function. As a result, it lowers aortic blood pressure. The Research was proved in nine prehypertension, four men and five postmenopausal women, aged 51-57 years.
According to Figueroa, Watermelon is the richest natural source of L-citrulline. “Amino acids substances required for the formation of nitric oxide is important for the regulation of vascular tone and healthy blood pressure,” said Figueroa.
Once in the body, L-citrulline is converted into L-arginine. So far, there are L-arginine in the form of supplements. But it may cause nausea, digestive problems and diarrhea. Conversely, watermelon are well-tolerated. Participants in the pilot study of Florida State reported no side effects.
In addition to benefits for blood vessels, watermelon provides vitamins A, B6, C, fiber, potassium, lycopene, and antioxidant. “Watermelon may even help reduce glucose levels,” said Arjmandi.
