Wearing Thigh-high Stockings Can Prevent Snoring

high stocking prevent snoringIf you frequently snore, try using a tight thigh-high stockings during the day. Researchers found it could prevent snoring and obstructive sleep apnea at night.

Recent research conducted at the University of Brescia, Italy, found that by using a tight long stockings, it can prevent deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) on a passenger plane to regulate blood flow through the legs.

It also can help people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, which makes people often snore and experience difficulty in breathing during sleep. Researchers found patients who used thigh-high stockings for a week can prevent one third of the sleep problems that they have.

“We found that in patients with chronic venous insufficiency, pressure stockings may reduce the accumulation of fluid in the legs during the day, which in turn reduces the amount of fluid flowing into the neck at night, thus reducing the number of apnoeas over a third,” explained Dr. Stefania Redolfi, leader of the study, according to theĀ  Dailymail.

People who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often wake up at night, which in turn leads to problems during the day such as excessive sleepiness.

In OSA, the muscles in the airway weakens during sleep that causes them to stop breathing for at least ten seconds before the brain signals cause muscle contraction to re-open the airway.

In this study, researchers studied 12 patients with vein problems that cause blood pooling in the lower leg during the day, which causes sleep problems triggered by excess fluid moving into the neck at night.

Patients were then asked to wear stockings from the time they wake up in the morning until they go to sleep for a week. In the next weeks the patient was observed without the use of stockings.

The results showed that 62 percent reduction in fluid volume changes in the leg during the night and a 36 percent reduction in the number of apnoeas per hour of sleep.

These findings have been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
