The No. 22 World AIDS Day is coming on December 1, 2009. A survey from China shows that in China more than 2,000 AIDS-infected persons had the experience of discrimination. Many government officials, teachers and even medical workers discriminate against AIDS patients. A lot of works on preventing AIDS and eliminating discrimination against AIDS had been done by government department of health, medical institutions and non-governmental organizations since the first AIDS patients was found in 1985 in China, but 24 years have passed, the public still have strong discrimination to AIDS-infected persons. So it is time for our government officials and medical workers to reflect why there is no right knowledge and attitude to AIDS-infected persons.

Discrimination against AIDS-infected persons has many negative impacts such as preventing AIDS-infected persons’ recovery and hindering the work of preventing AIDS. Because of discrimination, many AIDS patients don’t want to tell other people the truth, which may increase the risk of being infected for healthy persons. Because of discrimination, many people who often do high-risk behaviors such as taking drugs or feculent sexual intercourse refuse to accept AIDS testing, which can also raise the risk of being infected. Because of discrimination, many AIDS patients do not get proper help and treatment. All in all, once AIDS patients lost their sources of livelihood due to discrimination. They are vulnerable to transmit AIDS virus and have desire for revenge.

AIDS Prevention work is an important event which relates to people’s lives and health. Experience from many countries has showed that the governments always play an important role in preventing AIDS. Relevant laws can be passed by governments to protect AIDS patients’ rights. At the same time, governments can provide sufficient funds, which can be used for AIDS medical research. What should we do for AIDS patients? As the saying goes, love is the best medicine to cure all kinds of illness. So we should give more humanistic care and love to them. Finally, in older to make a further promotion in this work, we should make a deeper study of the special mind and behavior factors in AIDS propaganda, counseling, prevention and treatment.
