Why we feel sleepy after eating a lot
As reported by the Huffington Post, type of foods that contains fat, sugar and carbohydrates gives the most hormonal changes in the body. Because they trigger quick neural responses when food reaches the small intestin. This is according to experts from Scientific American.
Parasympathetic nerve responses received were then informed the body to slow down body movement and focus more on digesting food.
In addition, a group of brain cells called orexin neurons in the hypothalamus is also sensitive to glucose. Glucose levels will always automatically increase dramatically after a person eats a lot. Hence, neurons ultimately produce a special protein, orexin, in large quantities.
Then, the insulin hormone also increases after a person eats a lot. The hormones also affect the production of serotonin and melatonin which are associated triggers of drowsiness (and happiness).
The best way to reduce the risk of getting sleepy after eating a lot is to limit the amount of carbohydrates, fats, and sugars consumed. But basically the phenomenon is quite normal and is not a health issue to worry about.
But one thing to remember is not to get used to eating a lot at night before bed. Because the impact is that it affects your sleep patterns.
“If you eat dinner and then go to bed at ten o’clock, it means you turn off the function of insulin makes blood sugar levels go up and down. The impact is that you can easily wake up at night and difficult to sleep well,” said Dr. Loren Greene from New York University.
